In 2012, Nina Metz wrote an article, “Super Sad Book Trailers: The conundrum of online book advertisements-and why they usually fail.” She called book trailers the “awkward cousins of movie trailers.” We couldn’t agree more.

The cinematic term is confusing because while books and movies share characters, plot, and themes, their delivery styles are not cousins (kissing or otherwise). 

“Movies spoon feed imagery to the audience. Books tickle the reader’s imagination.”

Not only does the term confuse the market, it confuses the producers of book trailers. Movies and books ARE different. Movies spoon feed imagery to the audience while books tickle the reader’s imagination. Promotional videos for books should be about the words.

So, would a book trailer by another name smell sweeter? We bandied about many sorry samples and then one day, as it often happens, we made a joke. About promotional videos…

“Holy guano, bat boy. That’s it!”
